The silent schism: renewal of catholic spirit and structures
This book is about power in the church - the goals it serves and the manner in which it is exercised. Challenging many established practices, the author argues convincingly that ecclesiastical power structure are based substantially on secular political models. Until they conform fully to Christian faith and tradition, the church will continue to lose credibility for an increasing number of its members; they will simply abandon it, falling into the silent schism of the title. The author shows hoe renewal demands moral courage and intellectual honesty. With numerous practical examples from contemporary church experience, he demonstrates evangelical alternatives to existing power-play; he shows how democracy and hierarchy can co-exist in the service of community. While the author's challenge is addressed primarily to church leaders, it is equal concern to all who seek to participate in a community that reflect Christian imperatives in the late twentieth century.
